I have tried to follow Michael Pollan's mantra of "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants" and it is amazing how I feel so much better and have easily lost over 25 lbs in the past few months.FIONAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00525085661198210325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37886248.post-88268639949705120522009-09-09T14:20:52.202-07:002009-09-09T14:20:52.202-07:00Such an important topic. I addressed some of his ideas in a post here at Casual Kitchen.

It can be mortifying to find out how our minds can play tricks on us, can't it? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

DKDanielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02388302796031288076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37886248.post-60953113397761126922009-09-09T10:44:41.021-07:002009-09-09T10:44:41.021-07:00I will have to check this out. I'm currently enjoying a similarly themed book called Mindless Eating that explains why we over eat from a different angle - environmental cues and industry decisions like packaging, lighting, food names, etc. Fascinating!Hollyhttp://www.hollyreed.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37886248.post-30547096653830006022009-09-09T10:22:14.357-07:002009-09-09T10:22:14.357-07:00Joanne, I agree with you... And the issue of how f...Joanne, I agree with you... And the issue of how food companies give the public what they "want" is a good subject to pursue in future posts. It's worth asking why, for example, Doritos sell so well. And is it wrong to sell them if there is demand for them? People are going to have to want to choose real foods, rather than simply going for the hyperpalatable foods that food companies manufacture for us.

Alyoops, happy to hear I gave you a push--feel free to share your thoughts via email or via comments on this post once you've read it.

HG: It was funny but I was getting borderline uncomfortable in the "erotic" section of the book...! I felt both hungry and a little bit sheepish reading that section, strangely enough. But he used those passages really effectively to set up his arguments, so they ultimately added to (and didn't detract meaningfully from) the book. Glad you enjoyed the post, and thanks so much for the great feedback.

DKDanielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02388302796031288076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37886248.post-80636624622820658282009-09-09T05:40:06.392-07:002009-09-09T05:40:06.392-07:00Thanks Dan! Of course as bloggers we LIVE for comments letting us know we helped or inspired someone; so let me know how you go with the lamb.

Okay I, {as always} LOVED this post! I really love your objective critique of the book and it made me far more likely to listen to what you had to say than if you'd just bought into it wholly, dismissing it's quirks. I honestly couldn't have agreed more {without having read the book myself} with your thoughts on the subject!

And I love your description of the borderline erotic parts, hilarious. Reminds me of the way my husband rolls his eyes any time I watch Nigella Lawson, since he thinks she is always borderline erotic with her food!

Anyway, this was fantastic and I really want to read the book myself now!Natalie Quehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01453065317873829264noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37886248.post-64461454960835492632009-09-09T04:39:13.141-07:002009-09-09T04:39:13.141-07:00I bought this book and added it to my shelf lineup...I bought this book and added it to my shelf lineup of "things to read sometimes maybe when I get around to it."

It just moved up :DAlyssahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11528875541915884868noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37886248.post-79569544483166113692009-09-09T04:22:25.981-07:002009-09-09T04:22:25.981-07:00I'm always up for becoming more aware, especia...I'm always up for becoming more aware, especially when it comes to food so thanks for the review. It never fails to surprise me how low the food industry can go to "please" the public. They are ruining everyone's palates! If only there could be a revolution where everyone at once decided to start cooking healthier, fresher, REALER meals then maybe people would begin to appreciate how delicious fruits and veggies really are.Joannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17133232352924060797noreply@blogger.com
